CLIMBING EXPEDITIONS
KANG YATSE-1: On August 22, 2023 High Asia for Aphasia Co-Founders Greg & Barbara Leonard successfully summited Kang Yatse-I (21,000 ft / 6400 m). See more images here.
SATOPANTH: After spending most of September 2023 in the Garhwal Himalaya, Greg’s Mt. Satopanth expedition ended under a series of heavy snowstorms that thwarted all efforts to make a final summit attempt. The climbing party ascended to Camp 2 (~20,000 ft / 6100 m) before retreating to the safety of base camp. See more images here.
APHASIA AWARENESS
The aphasia awareness campaign was a great success. Through media coverage, public outreach events, social media, and countless person-to-person interactions we were able to inform and educate thousands of people about aphasia. Our message was heard in Tucson, across Arizona and the USA, in cities and villages in India, and in other countries around the world!
ABOUT
High Asia for Aphasia (HAFA) was founded in 2013. HAFA's mission is to raise awareness about aphasia: its causes, the presentation of the disorder, and the affect upon those with the condition and their loved ones. We also highlight the benefits of aphasia therapy and through our climbing and related activities raise funds for therapy scholarships for those is need of support.
Alpine climbing, while demanding, pales in comparison to the challenges faced by persons afflicted with aphasia. Still, the arduous path to each mountain summit is reflective of the struggle for those persons affected by aphasia to attain meaningful connection with others through communication.
